Manufacturer bucks economic downturn and expands
Father-son business, new equipment, breathe new life into vacant Springfield facility
Springfield, OH- A&E Powder Coating is reaping the benefits of strong customer service and a diversified client portfolio.
The business, started nearly a decade ago by Ed Leventhal and his son Adam, recently expanded into a bigger manufacturing facility in Springfield. The expansion is proof to the father-son team that their business strategy is a successful one as the economic slowdown leaves many manufacturing companies with less work.
"It is very exciting yet humbling at the same time," said Ed Leventhal, president of A&E. "We have been successful at finding new ways to deliver comprehensive powder-coating and other value added services at a time when the rest of the industry is demanding them."
A&E started its business in an 8,000-square-foot facility on Columbus Ave. The past decade brought a lot of growth and the company was soon finding it hard to accommodate all the orders and sizes of products it wanted to take on. An expansion was the next logical step and the Leventhals found a perfect place to do it, in a vacant manufacturing facility on Sheridan Ave.
The new 22,000 square-foot facility greatly expands A&E's space and allows the company to operate more efficiently with greater volumes of parts. With growth, A&E's operations on Columbus Ave. became so snug that the product flow was often disjointed. The new, larger facility is effectively a straightaway, allowing orders to be run faster and more efficiently.
The move to the new facility also allowed A&E to make considerable investments in new capital equipment. The organization now boasts two five-stage wash systems, two powder-coating booths and two new energy-efficient ovens, which allows them to handle a larger part profile in higher volumes.
"We have made a major investment in our future," Leventhal said. "This investment will allow us to better meet our customer's needs, and the added efficiency of our new equipment will allow us to maintain competitive prices."
A&E employs 18 employees and expects to hire three to five more over the next 12 to 18 months to handle its recent growth.
A&E Powder Coating was founded in 1999 by Ed and Adam Leventhal. The father-son partnership combines more than 45 years of experience in the manufacturing and powder coating industries. A&E serves a variety of industries including automotive, truck, school bus, computer, consumer product. The company provides many additional services to its clients including direct shipments, special packaging, masking of parts, assembly and rivnut application. A&E prides itself in being small enough to give customers the personal attention they need and deserve yet big enough to handle nearly any size project they may have.
